A thread lift is a cosmetic procedure that aims to lift and sculpt the shape of your face or breasts.Thread lifts use temporary, medical-grade suture material to “stitch-up” your skin so that it’s drawn tight. There are various kinds of threads. These include barbed sutures, PDO threads, cogs, cons, meshed threads, i-threads etc. There are various kinds of threads which are used in minimally invasive facial rejuvenation. These may be absorbable or non-absorbable, or may be elastic. These threads have different arrangements of barbs or cones. The threads used in thread-lift can be absorbable or non- absorbable. The non-absorbable threads contain ‘polypropylene’ whereas the absorbable threads are of 3 main types, i.e., polydiaxonone (PDO), polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCA). PDO threads are made of synthetic biodegradable polymer and get absorbed into the body over 6 months by hydrolysis and work by triggering fibroblasts to produce more collagen. PDO threads are of 3 main types, i.e., mono, cog and screw. Mono-threads are smooth without barbs. Cog threads have barbs which support skin. Screw threads have one or two inter-twisted threads around the needle. PLA threads are made from a bio-compatible polymer from lactic acid. These threads are re-absorbable and regenerate collagen over a long period of time than PDO threads. PLA threads have cones to hook and support skin.
PCA threads are the newest. These are biodegradable mono-filaments of prolactone. These regenerate collagen longer than PDO and PLA threads.
Various kinds of threads are available in market which are as follows:
1. Aptop threads and Waffle threads
2. Contour threads:
3. Multianchor suspention sutures (resorbable)
4. Silhouette soft
5. Polydioxanone threads (reabsorbable PDO threads)
6. Elastic threads (Serdev sutures)
7. Mesh threads
*Local anaesthesia is injected at the insertion points.
*The threads are inserted through tiny slits beneath the skin
*The threads are sewed through and the skin is re-draped.
*The extra length of threads is cut
The swelling and bruising takes about 1-2 weeks to settle. A few precautions have
to be observed. The final results are seen after 1-2 months.
